Camila Giorgi’s US Open is over for another year after she was beaten 6-4, 7-5 by Venus Williams on Wednesday evening.

The Italian, bidding to equal her best-ever showing at Flushing Meadows, was up against the 16th seed on the new Louis Armstrong court, and although showed flashes of brilliance throughout the near two-hour encounter, failed to take her chances – notably three break points at 4-4 in the second set.

Elsewhere on Wednesday, Jonathan Erlich’s doubles tournament came to an early end when he and Pakistan’s Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi, were beaten 6-3, 6-4 by American duo Austin Krajicek and Tennys Sandgren.

Thursday sees Israel’s other representative, Julia Glushko, bid to reach the third round when she takes on the world number 20, Japan’s Naomi Osaka. Elsewhere, Argentine Diego Schwartzman faces Spain’s Jaume Munar, also for a place in round three.
