Giorgi wins Wimbledon opener

Italian through to second round after winning three-set thriller.

Camila Giorgi is through to the second round at Wimbledon

Camila Giorgi is safely through to the second round of the women’s singles competition at Wimbledon after battling her way past Frenchwomen Alize Cornet.

Despite there being more than 40 places between them in the rankings – with Giorgi the lesser ranked of the two, the Italian, who has dropped down to 86th place, was playing catch-up after losing the first set 7-5. However, she bounced back, leveling the match by taking the second set 6-4, before winning the third and deciding one by the same scoreline in a match which lasted just short of two-and-a-half hours. She next takes on the 17th seed, American Madison Keys.

There was though a loss for Israeli-born Canadian Denis Shapovalov. Up against Poland’s Jerzy Janowicz, the 18-year-old was beaten 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-7.

Tuesday will see Dudi Sela get his singles campaign underway, with him facing Marcel Granollers.

Elsewhere, Argentine Diego Schwartzman begins with a tough-looking match against the 13th seed, Bulgarian, Grigor Dimitrov.
