Glushko suffers French Open exit

Julia Glushko’s French Open adventure is over after she suffered a comprehensive defeat on Saturday.

The 24-year-old, who’s ranked 98 in the world, enjoyed her best ever showing at a Grand Slam, having reached the third round, though was ruthlessley beaten 6-0, 6-1 by the world number 11, Italian Sara Errani, in 52 minutes.

However, her successful week in Paris will see her climb around 15 places in the rankings – which also ensures she will replace Shahar Peer as Israel’s top women’s singles player.

Speaking about her tournament, she told reporters: “I had a good tournament with two excellent wins, I was focused and followed my tactics against Errani, but I was facing a very tough opponent who didn’t miss a ball and played amazingly.”

Her coach Asaf Ingber said: “We consider this defeat a learning experience. We will have to continue and work hard in order to realize Glushko’s goal of breaking into the world’s top 50.”

Israeli interest at Roland Garros was ended later on Saturday when Jonathan Erlich and Marcelo Melo were beaten in the third round of the men’s doubles 6-4, 7-6 by the number 9 seeds Lukasz Kubot and Robert Lindstedt.
