Glushko wins first Australian Open qualifier

Israeli two wins away from main draw in Melbourne.

Julia Glushko

Julia Glushko has won her first Australian Open qualifier after she beat the Czech Republic’s Tereza Martincova on Thursday morning.

Winning 6-2, 7-6, she next faces the sixth seed, American, Julia Boserup, for a place in the third and final qualifier.

Amir Weintraub’s qualifying campaign ended in disappointing style after he was beaten in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, by Croatian Ivan Dodig, meaning Dudi Sela and Jonathan Erlich are the only Israelis guaranteed of a place in the first round of the first Grand Slam of the year, which gets underway on Monday.

Elsewhere, American Noah Rubin is through to the second round of qualifiers, where he’ll face Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena.

Sela’s preparations have seen him reach the semi-finals of the Challenger Event in Canberra, after he beat Australian Sam Groth 7-6, 6-2.

Erlich is currently in Auckland, where he’s teaming up with Jewish American Scott Lipsky. They take on Domonic Ingolt and Florin Mergea.
