Government pledges to protect Hebrew exams
The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to securing Hebrew qualifications following warning they could be dropped by exam boards.
The OCR and AQA exam boards said last year they might drop the subject at GCSE and A-Level.
But education minister Nick Gibb yesterday echoed Nicky Morgan’s pledge during the election campaign to protect heritage languages including Hebrew during a meeting with the Board of Deputies.
Chief Executive Gillian Merron, who led the Board’s delegation, said: “We found the Minister very engaged and constructive on the issues we raised. Protecting the teaching of Hebrew in schools is a clear priority for us – and it was good to hear that the Government shares our view.”
The Board has been engaging with Government, parliamentarians and the exam boards themselves over the issue.
Also on the agenda for the meeting was the upcoming review of the Admissions Code and the challenge of extremism in schools. As well as Merron, the Board’s Public Affairs Director Phil Rosenberg and Education Policy Manager Sara Perlmutter attended the meeting.
