The Haim sisters in Hackney this Bank Holiday weekend

If you are looking for something to do on Bank Holiday Monday, look no more as Haim, the American rock band comprised of three Jewish sisters is headlining at All Points East, the music festival in Victoria Park.

The sisters Danielle, Alana and Este Haim from Los Angeles signed their very first record deal in the UK back in 2012, and they have been nominated for  four Grammys and as Best International Group at the Brit Awards in 2014 and 2018,  but then won in 2021.

Though the sisters toyed with the name The Bagel Bitches, before settling on the Hebrew word for “life,” which is also the surname of  their Israeli father Mordecai (Moti) Haim who played for Maccabi Jaffa football team. It was Moti who introduced Este, 36, Danielle , 34 and Alana 31, to the music of Ofra Haza,

One of their earliest performances with their family band Rockinhaim was in the back of  Canter’s Deli  in L.A., where they were paid in matzo ball soup, and they even planned a tour of delis in 2020, but it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Never shying away from questions about their faith, the Haim sisters tell anyone who will listen about the importance of  being Jewish as part of their upbringing. As they told GQ. “When it comes to Judaism, the thing that really kept us together was the family aspect. It was the High Holidays, coming together as a family for an event. A meal.”

Alana is also now acting  and received BAFTA and Oscar nominations for her role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza. Rumours about her playing Carol King in the upcoming biopic were quashed when the part went to Daisy Ridley Jones.

In December 2021, Haim released their own rendition of Adam Sandler’s “The Chanukah Song,” name-dropping Doja Cat, Timothée Chalamet, Rashida Jones, Dan and Eugene Levy and Maya Rudolph, among others. Adam Sandler approved of the tune, retweeting the video and writing, “Love you ladies! You are three badass Jews! ” Check out the song. youtube.com/watch?v=EuEVPuM0iPM

Haim will be supported by Girl in Red, Confidence Man, Lizzy McAlpine as well as others at Luno Presents All Points East on Monday. https://www.allpointseastfestival.com
