Harrow Council adopts international anti-Semitism definition

The body follows neighbours Hertsmere and Barnet in taking on the more expansive definition of Jew hate

Harrow on the Hill

Harrow has followed the lead of Hertsmere and Barnet to become the latest Council to adopt a new and expanded working definition of anti-Semitism.

Harrow Labour Group supported the vote to use the new International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition, which was adopted by Theresa May in December, and which covers claims that “Israel is a racist endeavour”.

Cllr Kiran Ramchandani said: “It is important that we send a clear message to our Jewish population that we support them and will do all in our power to deter the promoters of anti-Semitism from attacking our Harrow Jewish community.”

Harrow’s Labour councillors proposed the motion at last week’s Council meeting, saying: “This will ensure that all Council staff actively seek to discourage anti-Semitism when they encounter it.”
