Harrowing Holocaust film ‘Son of Saul’ wins Golden Globe

A harrowing film about an Auschwitz-Birkenau guard who sought to give a gassed child a decent burial has won a Golden Globe award.

Death camp drama ‘Son of Saul,’ directed by Laszlo Nemes, won best foreign-language film for its portrayal of a Hungarian-Jewish Sonderkommando death camp worker forced to cremate bodies.

Played by Geza Rohri, the man finds the body of a young boy he thinks is his son, and decides to bury him, embarking on a tireless search for a rabbi.

“The Holocaust has become over the years an abstraction,” said Nemes, accepting the award in Beverley Hills. “For me, it is more – a face, a human face. So let’s not forget that face.”
