Hendon clinch Premier Division title following Oakwood win

The Premier Division title decider saw Oakwood relinquish their crown as Hendon beat them 3-1 to be crowned champions.

Hendon claimed the victory they needed to ensure they claimed the title with a game to spare.

Goals from Mordy Weiler, Zac Lewis and Dovi Fehler saw them to the points, with player-manager Greg Corin telling jewishnews.co.uk: “I’m immensely proud of winning the league title today against a competitive and hardworking Oakwood team. For me the score was deserved and I believe we showed today we are the best team in this league by some way. 

“The desire, commitment and effort of today’s performance epitomised our season. Relentless in trying to win game after game and it’s great for the team that we’ve managed to bring it all together. 

“The quality in the Hendon squad is deserving of winning many amateur leagues, we’ve scored some tremendous goals and played fantastic football throughout the season. 

“It’s not been easy taking on the mantle of manager left from David Garbacz and also believing that I have still a lot to offer the team as a player but I think I’ve managed to get the player manager balance right and it’s worked well this season for the club. 

“We enjoy today and prepare ourselves for the Anekstein final in two weeks time where we know Oakwood will be as fired up as ever and they’ll want to ensure we don’t do the double this year. Hopefully we can put in one more big performance.”

O’s manager Daniel Kristall told jewishnews.co.uk: “After pulling together a squad with 48 hours notice, we take a lot of positives from today.

“Understandably, Hendon wanted to win the league on the pitch as opposed to a default. As you can see with the league’s decision to award the Redbridge game to them, the result today was actually irrelevant in terms of the title but we understood that it was important for this game to be played.

“Hendon behaved superbly in arranging the game with us at such short notice. Football was the real winner.

“We can take lots of positives from the performance today against a full-strength Hendon side and we have been generally able to use the game as preparation for the final and an opportunity to give players minutes. We will hope to welcome back a few key players for the final in a few weeks.

“Finally, I’d like to wish Hendon a big mazeltov on winning the title. They deserve it because they have been the most consistent side in the league this season so fair play to them. To win a title as we saw last season, you have to win games regularly and for several reasons (mainly injuries), we just haven’t quite been able to do that this season.

“As for the title, we have already begun working hard behind the scenes on a charge to regain it next season. For now, we prepare for the Anekstein final.”

Fairlop maintained their title push with this comfortable – and surprising – win at the leaders.

Daryl Rubin, Bradley Gayer and Max Freedman all scoring for the visitors.

Mincha manager Alon Pinhas told jewishnews.co.uk: “It was a shame to end it like that, however we were far from our best today and Fairlop capitalised on that.

“They were the better team and they won deservedly. We knew they’re a talented bunch and knew it wasn’t going to be an easy test. Our chances of winning the league are now extremely thin as we can only rely on Fairlop losing. However, our target of getting promoted that we set at the beginning of the season was reached. We have had a great season and I’m extremely proud of all the boys. We are very much looking forwards to next season.”

CATFORD & BROMLEY MACCABI 2 HERTSWOOD VALE 2
An injury time own goal earned Vale a point in this entertaining match.

Josh Gorb had fired the visitors into a 28th minute lead, only for The Cats to strike twice before the break, to go into half-time 2-1 up.

That’s how the score stayed until the 92nd minute, when Josh Cohen tricked his way into the box, with Jack Shulman’s pressure on their defender forcing him to put the ball through his own net.

Vale manager Jacob Emanuel told jewishnews.co.uk: “In fairness to Catford, they played their long-ball tactics to a tee, and I imagine that Jeff “Tony Pulis” Gotch will be disappointed not to have won this one.

“We didn’t turn up at all but we’ll absolutely take a point in our quest to finish fifth.”

Fortune will meet Faithfold in the final, after they overcame Team on penalties, following this stalemate.

Fortune manager Simon Linden told jewishnews.co.uk: “It was a famous win for us – dull 0-0 but our 18-year-old keeper Joel Carlowe saved three spot kicks.

“Drafted in following Lee Fegans injury, prepped by the quarter-final penalty saver Lee, Joel pulled out the bag three saves to send us into the final

“The 90 minutes was tough, FC team probably edged it but we wanted it more as group, from 1-16 involved they can all didn’t let the club down.

“It’s a proud day for this legendary football club as we go into our 50th year next season. We have a lot of setbacks this season but with a new look management team in place and the merge of both teams we will be extremely competitive next year. We now look forward to the final in two weeks’ time under the floodlights.”

Team manager Mitch Young told jewishnews.co.uk: “To lose in a semi final on penalties is of course very upsetting. However, looking back at the game we have no regrets and there is nothing I would have done differently. It was always going to be a very close game and I believe we were slightly the better team. We had three or four nice chances in the second half and their goalkeeper pulled off two or three stunning saves, if it wasn’t for him we would be in the final.

“This is the first time all season we have failed to score and if you don’t score, you cant win a game of football. I have never seen or heard of their goalkeeper before but fair play to them and him. I was impressed with how Fortune battled and gave it their all and good luck to them in the final.”
