Jewish footballing history was made this week as a London side faced off against MK Dons in the Youth FA Cup.

Maccabi London Lions U18 became the first Jewish team to qualify for the competition’s first round, eventually being defeated by the League One side’s U-18 outfit 5-0.

The game was far tighter than the eventual scoreline suggested however, with the Lions keeping Dons to 2-0 right up until the 75th minute, forcing a number of saves in the early part of the second half. The Dons’ team showed their fitness to net three late goals.

Managed by Andy Miller and Steve Gordon, the Lions’ team had numerous travelling supporters at the 30,000 seater stadium, with captain Zack Miller saying the appearance was a “great achievement”.

He thanked “the massive support of our fans who came to watch”.

“Steve and I have managed this team for over 10 years and this is the highest level at which the team has competed.  We are extremely proud of the squad who caused real problems for MK for much of the game.  A great experience for everyone involved.”
