HJPS girls lift school’s football title

HJPS’ winning side

The latest Maccabi GB School Sports Tournament ended in success for HJPS, as they triumphed against 18 other teams to win the Years 5/6 Girls Football Tournament.

The event, at Mill Hill Power League, saw nine schools bring 19 teams to play, which in total saw more than 150 young people compete.

The tournament saw teams split into four groups and play each other in a league format, with the top two teams in each group qualifying for the knock-out stages.

The semi-finals were both very good games, with Naima beating Clore Shalom in convincing style to reach the final, while HJPS earned their place in the final by beating Akiva with two well worked goals.

The final was a very close game with both sides playing cautiously and trying to create a break-through. Naima had the better of the chances on the HJPS goal but did not manage to convert any of them. At the other end, HJPS had some chances of their own, getting on the score sheet just the once to crown them year 5 and 6 girls football champions. The afternoon concluded with the medals presentation and the trophy was awarded to the winning HJPS team.

Maccabi GB’s School and Sports Coordinator, Alex Elf, spoke about the numbers engaged in the girl’s competition. He saidL “To see 150 young girls competing in a Maccabi GB tournament is a massive achievement. We are looking forward to future girl’s tournaments where we hope the number of participants will keep on rising. We’d like to thank all the teachers and parents that came and supported their teams in the pouring rain. Finally, congratulations to HJPS for winning their first years 5 and 6 football tournament.”
