Holocaust survivor Manfred Goldberg delivers message of hope to Jewish community

More than 500 people gathered for an evening of hope at a havdalah event hosted by continuity charity Jewish Futures.

Held in support of Israel, “Let There Be Light” took place at Hasmonean Girls School in Hendon.

Rabbi Schiff welcomed Nicky and Chantal Young, parents of Nathanel Young, one of the brave soldiers murdered on October 7. Chantal Young shared Nathanel’s passion for defending his country and urged parents to support their children in pursuing their dreams, emphasising the importance of expressing love for your children daily.

A touching video tribute to Nathanel, showcasing his life through videos, pictures, and emotional news coverage, was presented by Jewish Futures, evoking a sense of collective remembrance and honouring his bravery.

The children’s choir from Shalom Noam School performed a beautiful version of “Acheinu” and Michelle Barnet, representing GIFT, spoke about the organisation’s efforts during the ongoing conflict. The social action organisation has successfully collected 5 tonnes of essential items, engaging over 1000 volunteers in various activities to support Israel.

Rabbi Schiff invited Holocaust survivor Manfred Goldberg on stage to speak. Goldberg, reflecting on his own experiences, expressed his steadfast belief in the enduring strength of the Jewish community. Despite historical challenges and empires attempts to destroy the Jews, he emphasised that Jews have a unique place in the world and are destined to shine as an example of resilience and hope to the world.

Rabbi Schiff said: “Tonight, we stand together, a beacon of light in a world that at present seems dark. Let this unity inspire us to continue our shared journey, spreading love and hope in the face of adversity together as a family.”
