Hundreds show Jewish pride as new Chabad Centre opens in Mill Hill East
Days after Chanukah terror attack in Australia, Rabbi Dovie Schochet says: 'We are not just opening a building, we are lighting a flame'
On the first night of Chanukah, more than 300 people gathered for the launch of a new Chabad Centre in Mill Hill East.
The event marked a powerful statement of Jewish unity, pride and resilience following the recent antisemitic terrorist attack at the Chabad organised Chanukah event on Bondi Beach in Australia which left fifteen people dead.
Rabbi Dovie Schochet described the launch as deeply moving. “We are not just opening a building, we are lighting a flame,” he said. “This Centre will be a home for every Jew in Mill Hill East, a place of warmth, learning and proud Jewish life.”
The Chabad Centre will host Shabbat and Yom Tov services, children’s programmes, adult learning, community events and pastoral support, creating a welcoming space for Jews of all backgrounds.
Rabbi Schochet explained that a Chabad House stands openly and shines outward, much like a menorah, whilst Rabbi Levi Sudak of Chabad of Edgware affixed the mezuzah, formally marking the Centre’s opening.
