Hundreds of pro-Israel democracy campaigners in the UK have signed a letter sent to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak urging him to raised their concerns with Benjamin Netanyahu.

The letter, currently signed by nearly 800 people, urges Sunak to show both “friendship and leadership” by recognising that voicing concerns about Netanyahu’s judicial overhaul”is in the best interest of the UK.”

Recalling the Sunak’s recent pledge to “fight very hard for the security of the Jewish state” it suggests that an expected meeting between the UK PM and Netanyahu offers him the opportunity “to act now, before it is too late.”

Netanyahu’s UK visit, now confirmed for next week,  “presents a timely opportunity to address concerns”, the letter adds, particularly as a free trade agreement between the two countries could be impacted by the controversial Israeli legislation.

Benjamin Netanyahu addresses his supporters from a truck at a campaign event in the run up to Israel’s election.

The signatories, supporters of the movement that has staged mass protests in Israel, the UK, and elsewhere against Israel’s government , suggest there are “multiple reasons” why Sunak should act now.

They claim that current legislation being passed by Netanyahu’s coalition government “will have a devastating impact” on Israeli’s economy leaving it a “diminished trading partner for the UK.”

The letter also suggests an undemocratic Israel “will have a destabilising effect on security and politics of the Middle East” including the danger of “civil war.”

It is stated:”By taking a stand now the UK will reinforce its position as a beacon for global, pluralistic societies and consolidate its role as a leading voice in the coalition against anti-democratic forces.”

Campaigners against Netanyahuin the UK also told supporters on Friday they were arranging further discussions with Sunak’s advisers to help “encourage him to take action” on Netanyahu’s plans.

Reports in Israel on Friday confirmed Netanyahu would travel to London on Thursday and return Saturday evening following Shabbat.

He is likely to meet with Sunak, and with Jewish communal leaders.
