IN PICTURES: Ceremony to mark 70 years since liberation of Belsen

The 70th anniversary of the liberation of Bergen-Belsen was marked with a ceremony at the camp on Sunday 26 April.

Hundreds gathered at Belsen in northern Germany, to remember over 70,000 victims, including Anne Frank.

The camp was liberated  by British soldiers on 15 April 1945.

Among those at the ceremony were Holocaust survivors, Joachim Gauck, the German president, Ronald Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress and the Chief Rabbi, Ephraim Mirvis.

Karen Pollock MBE, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust said: “We were proud and honoured to take part in the international commemorations yesterday with two hundred HET ambassadors, teachers and supporters, along with the Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen and Women.

“The liberation of Bergen-Belsen by British forces is a central part of our history – 70 years on, it was a privilege to be there to remember the thousands of people who died at Bergen-Belsen at the hands of the Nazis and those who managed to survive, and to pay tribute to the liberators.”
