In Pictures: New Israel Fund’s Human Rights Awards dinner

A total of £240,000 was raised at the New Israel Fund’s annual Human Rights Awards dinner, during which three young Israeli social justice activists were honoured.

Around 350 guests were at the Grand Connaught Rooms to hear Israeli Labour MK Merav Michaeli in conversation with The Guardian’s Jonathan Freedland. Nobel prize nominee Amal Elsana Elhajooj was honoured for her pioneering work in community development among Bedouin women and for furthering the cause of a shared society between Jews and Arabs. Mickey Gitzin was recognised for inspiring thousands of young Israelis and campaigning for religious freedom in Israel. And lawyer Itzik Dessie was honoured for championing communal services for the Ethiopian community.

Committee chairman Jeannie Horowitz said: “Our winners are a true inspiration and bring a message of hope for the future. Itzik, Amal and Mickey have, in their different ways, improved the lives of thousands of Israelis.”
