In the pink: a billion reasons to love Barbie

Greta Gerwig becomes the first solo female director with a film to gross more than $1 billion

Barbie

The Barbie movie has made more than $1 billion just 17 days after its global release.

Starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, the financials make Greta Gerwig, the Oscar-nominated director of “Lady Bird” and “Little Women”, the first ever solo female film-maker to achieve a billion dollar film.

To date, Barbie has raked in $459 million in North America and $572 million internationally.

Gerwig co-wrote the screenplay with her Jewish partner Noah Baumbach and the film stars Jewish actress Rhea Perlman as the doll’s real-life Jewish creator, Ruth Handler.

Speaking to entertainment industry bible Variety, Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros studio’s president of domestic distribution and Andrew Cripps, president of international distribution, admitted they are not often “rendered speechless by a film’s performance” and that “Barbillion”, as they now call the movie, has “blown even our most optimistic predictions out of the water.”

It’s clearly a Barbie world, after all.
