Independent land primary schools football title

Independent saw off the challenge of 26 other teams as they won the Maccabi GB Primary Schools Years 3 and 4 Football Tournament.

The event, at Mill Hill PowerLeague, saw 260 young footballers, from 14 schools, compete in the latest schools event.

The tournament saw teams split into five groups and play each other in a league format with the top team in each group qualifying for the Knock-Out stages along with the three best overall runner ups. Every match was exciting with a competitive edge, with the latter stages of the tournament producing some exciting attacking displays from the footballers on show.

The semi-finals were both end-to-end games, with Independent beating Clore Shalom in convincing style to reach the final, while Akiva earned their place in the final by beating HJPS.

The Final was a close affair with both sides playing good technical football, looking to create a break-through. Independent had the better of the chances on the Akiva goal but were unable to take them, with the post and then the bar denying them the opening goal. Just when it looked like Independent’s goal-scoring luck may be out, they struck with a well worked move to break the deadlock. A second goal came soon afterwards to secure the victory and crown Independent the Maccabi GB Years 3 and 4 Champions.

The afternoon concluded with the medals presentation and the trophy was awarded to the winners.

Maccabi GB’s School and Sports Coordinator, Alex Elf, said: “Our aim is to provide as many sporting opportunities as possible to the Community so to see 260 young people competing in a Maccabi GB tournament is a massive achievement. We are looking forward to future competitions where we hope the number of participants will continue to rise.”
