Edwin Shuker is the early favourite to replace Gary Mond at the Board of Deputies top table.
The Iraq-born businessman and philanthropist, who previously chaired the communities and education division, is believed to have secured the declared support of more than 50 deputies as he bids to return as a vice-president.
He stepped down from the role ahead of the last election in May but the resignation of Mond over social media posts revealed by Jewish News has offered the chance of a quick comeback.
Shuker told Jewish News: “The Circumstances that led to this position unexpectedly materialising and the opportunity to build on the work of a division which I led until recently left me with no doubt that I am the right person for the right position at the right time. From the initial overwhelmingly positive reaction my fellow deputies seem to agree.”
Candidates must secure the nominations of at least 20 deputies to enter the race, with a vote taking place on 20 February. It’s thought no other candidate has yet crossed that threshold.
David Mendoza-Wolfson, who heads the Board’s international division, has been made senior vice-president after Mond’s departure, having come second to him in last year’s poll.
