Israel’s hopes of earning promotion to Group B of the UEFA Nations League, as well as booking a play-off spot for the 2020 European Championships, were ended on Tuesday night following a 3-2 defeat by Scotland.

Needing just a draw to finish top of Group C1, Brighton midfielder Beram Kayal got them off to the perfect start when he fired home a stunning 30-yard strike in the ninth minute.

However, Celtic winger James Forrest was to prove to be their downfall, as he netted twice before the break, before completing his hat-trick just after the hour mark, to put the Scots in control.

Eran Zahavi gave the visitors hope with another superb long-distance strike for the Israelis, before substitute Tomer Hemed had the chance to snatch a late, dramatic equaliser, though was denied by goalkeeper Allan McGregor.

Ahead of the kick-off on a wet and windy evening, the Israeli players gave the mascots to keep warm.
