Israel’s military is to investigate after a Palestinian child was shot dead during a protest last week, in a killing sharply criticised by the United Nations, the European Union and the British Government.

Ali Ayman Abu Aliya, 13, died after he was shot in the abdomen on Friday during a protest against the construction of a Jewish settlement in the West Bank, which the IDF described as “violent riots”.

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh said it was “a new crime added to the occupation’s long record”. The EU described it as “shocking” and UN Middle East Envoy Nickolay Mladenov said he was “appalled”.

Britain’s Middle East Minister James Cleverly tweeted that he was “saddened” by the news, adding: “I urge Israel to ensure that its investigation is swift and comprehensive.”
