Israeli businessman to be given OBE by The Queen for his ‘economic diplomacy’

An Israeli businessman who spearheaded British and Israeli partnerships in the world of technology will receive a rare honour from The Queen this week, in recognition of his role in “economic diplomacy”.

Haim Shani, who chairs the UK Israel Tech Hub, is to be appointed an Honorary Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by the British Ambassador to Israel, David Quarrey, at a ceremony on Thursday.

As chief executive of NICE Systems Ltd, one of Israel’s largest technology companies, Shani led the acquisition of British companies, on his way to making NICE the $1 billion turnover group it is today.

He helped the Embassy launch the Tech Hub seven years ago, and this in turn led to big British companies such as Aviva, BT, Royal Bank of Scotland and Tesco all forging commercial partnerships with growing Israeli technology firms.

“Through his belief in the potential of collaboration between the UK and Israel, Haim has helped transform the tech partnership between the two countries,” said Quarrey.

“We have benefited hugely from his experience and wisdom. I am grateful to Haim for his role in making the UK Israel Tech Hub a success and for pioneering this new form of economic diplomacy.”
