Israeli duo win opening US Open qualifiers

Julia Glushko and Amir Weintraub recorded comprehensive wins in their first qualifying matches, as they bid to reach the main draw of the third Grand Slam of the year.

Glushko, whose looking to reach her fourth US Open, booked her place in to the second round after she beat Japan’s Miharu Imanishi 6-4, 7-5. She next faces American Jennifer Brady.

Weintraub’s bid to reach the main draw of the US Open for the first time saw him beat American Daniel Nguyen 6-3, 6-2 in his first qualifier, he next faces the ninth seed, Czech Radek Stepanek.

Elsewhere in the draw, American Noah Rubin was handed a walkover win over China’s Yan Bai, who was forced to retire injured, with the American 3-0 up in the first set.

Dudi Sela has already qualified for the main draw.
