An Israeli paramedic who spat on portraits of Jesus while visiting a Christian family to carry out a Covid-19 test has been fired.

The Magen David Adom (MDA) employee was caught on camera removing his mask and overalls before spitting on three pictures in the communal hallway of a block of flats in Jaffa in Tel Aviv.

The tenant caught him doing it and raced down to confront him, at which point the medic said the images were a form of idolatry forbidden by the Hebrew Bible. “In Judaism this is foreign worship,” he was filmed saying.

MDA, Israel’s national medical emergency and blood services organisation, said it “strongly condemned” his conduct and said the former staffer was “unworthy of representing the organisation”.
