An Israeli policewomen has died and another has been seriously wounded in a shooting and stabbing attack at Damascus Gate in Jerusalem on Wednesday by three armed assailants who were all killed at the scene.

Corporal Hadar Cohen, 19, from the Border Police, was taken to hospital but later died from her wounds. She had been one of the first to confront the trio, none of whom had security records.

The attackers, from the Jenin area of the West Bank and in their early 20s, were armed with automatic weapons, knives and explosives.

The deputy commander of the Jerusalem District Police said the level of the attack was “unprecedented” and described it as “an escalation”.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said bomb disposal experts were called in to disarm two pipe bombs left at the scene, after they failed to explode.
