Israeli tech firm launches UK branch after £9m boost for development centre

An Israeli space technology firm developing satellite communications has set up shop in the UK after a Government agency gave it £9 million to establish a research and development centre at Harwell.

The company, called hiSky, this week launched its UK subsidiary – hiSkySay Ltd – and wants to be world’s first low-cost satellite network operator. It is working with the UK Space Agency to create more than 100 new jobs in London and Oxford.

The Israeli firm uses new technology to get the most out of old satellites for voice and data communications, and Science Minister Chris Skidmore said the company’s UK expansion was part of the Government’s industrial strategy.

Shahar Kravitz, the company’s chief executive, said: “We are honoured to be partners with the UK Space Agency. It is our privilege to establish the first real low-cost global Virtual Satellite Network and to do it in the UK.”

Kravitz said the firm’s technology can be adapted to suit forthcoming Low Earth Orbit telcoms constellations, adding that the UK Government had “been very supportive of our technology and our concept from the beginning… We are grateful for the chance given to us and look forward to grow within the UK”.
