It’s match of the pray for Arsenal and Spurs fans!

Arsenal and Tottenham supporters could be excused for suspecting a higher force was at work after their teams were drawn to face each other in a crunch third round League Cup football tie… on Yom Kippur, writes James Graham.

Tuesday night’s draw pitted the two north London rivals together, with the match at Spurs’ White Hart Lane stadium set to take place either on Tuesday 22 September – Kol Nidre – or 24 hours later, two minutes before the end of Yom Kippur.

Supporters of both sides took to social media to vent their frustration, while others adopted a more light-hearted approach to the draw, which will result in hundreds of Jewish supporters being forced to miss out on attending one of the games of the season.

Adam Morris, a season ticket holder at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium, tweeted: “Just in case the Spurs-Arsenal game was close to being a rare Capital One Cup sell-out, the game will be on Kol Nidre or Yom Kippur. Nice.”

Spurs fan Simon Coggin wrote on Facebook: “I’ll bring my tallit”, while Alex Angel, a fellow Spurs fan, joked that he will be packing “a few extra smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels” to break the fast at the stadium.
