Chigwell Athletic pulled off the shock of the weekend as they dumped rivals Redbridge out of the Peter Morrison Trophy; it was a magnificent performance from the visitors as they deservedly booked their place in the next round of the cup. Goals from Dean Ben Yosef, Ryan Cole and a brace from James Jaconelli steering Chigwell to an amazing cup win.
It was a cold and windy morning at the Ark in a feisty encounter, Redbridge started the best, playing quick one-touch passing football, whilst dominating the early possession. Steve Gurvets found space on the left and he whipped in a great cross, Jay Jaffer raced off his line to clear the danger but Stolerman nipped in first only for his effort to sail over the bar – it was a good chance for the hosts to take the lead.
At this point you were thinking that it was going to be a long day at the office for Chigwell, but after an early onslaught by Redbridge they grew into the game. And Chigwell took the lead as bad defending in the RJC defence allowed Dean Ben Yosef to race clear, Dan Lee rushed out but couldn’t prevent Yosef from going through and coolly slotting past the man on the line. It was the perfect start for Richard Slater and his side.
Redbridge responded well to the early setback as talisman Gurvets smashed one onto the bar, he then linked up well with Richard Rosenthal as keeper Jaffer was forced to make a smart save from Rosenthal’s effort. Redbridge were level before the break as top scorer Adam Stolerman headed past Jaffer to bring the scores level.
The second half begun in the same conditions as the first, with the wind being a big factor, and the wind almost cost Chigwell a goal. A ball was launched forward from Redbridge’s defence as keeper Jay Jaffer raced off his line to collect, the wind gave the ball extra momentum and Jaffer mistimed the pace of the ball and fumbled it straight to Stolerman who looked certain to score. But Jaffer reacted well as he was quickly back on his line to block Stolerman’s shot. But the best was still to come from Jaffer as he tipped over a ferocious shot by Rosenthal, from the resulting corner Redbridge defender Joel Berg was unmarked but he couldn’t direct his header on target as it cannoned off the bar. Chigs had started the half off again slowly but soon restored their lead as Jaconelli and co. upped the momentum for the Division One side.
Steve Summers who had an excellent game in the middle of the park for Chigwell played through Ryan Cole, it was an excellent defence splitting pass by the ex RCJ man but Cole still had a lot to do. Lee rushed out of his goal to narrow the angle but Cole slotted the ball past him to restore Chigwell’s lead. Moments later Sam Rosenthal’s men had a golden opportunity to draw level. Stolerman forced Jaffer to parry as he unleashed a fierce shot, it only got parried as far as Danny Sugarman who looked certain to bury the ball from only a couple of yards out, but somehow he managed to miss the target as his shot sailed over the bar, much to Chigwell’s relief.
But what happened next was a moment of pure genius, James Jaconelli found space from 25 yards and unleashed a thunderous strike which fizzed past Lee and into the roof of the net, Chigwell finally had some breathing space. They dominated the rest of the game and even added a fourth as Yosef picked out Jaconelli who slotted home from the near post. Jaconelli even had the opportunity to complete his hat-trick, it was the same combination as Yosef picked out Jaconelli but Lee pushed away Jaconelli’s header.
It’s now back to league action for both sides, Redbridge will be hoping for League title glory in the Premier Division whilst Chigwell will hope this win gives them momentum to push their way up the Division One table.
