Jewish Care to help elderly “have their say” ahead of General Election

Jewish Care has issued guidance to its care home staff to help elderly residents register to vote ahead of the General Election in May.

Ahead of the registration cut-off date on 20 April, the charity told staff to “create opportunities to engage” such as by setting up a mock election or staging a pretend Prime Minister’s Question Time.

While 76 percent of over-65s voted in the last election, the figure fell dramatically when it came to older people living in residential care – a group researchers have described as “one of the most significant under-registered sections of our community”.

A spokeswoman said: “Home care and day centre staff can play pivotal roles in helping other older or vulnerable people to have their say, where they may struggle without support.”
