Jewish housing society to build almost 50 homes in Hertsmere and Mill Hill

Nearly fifty new homes are to be built by a Jewish housing association in Hertsmere and Mill Hill.

The initiative will include 27 homes in Hertsmere, home to Britain’s biggest Jewish community in Borehamwood, and 22 in Mill Hill East, with a mix of rented and shared ownership units.

Suzanne Wolfe, chief executive of the Industrial Dwellings Society (IDS) which is building the homes, said: “What we are focusing on is the centres of Jewish community to support the community by providing homes for those who couldn’t normally access them.

“We’ve always had elders housing but this is the first time for many years that we have had access open to our wider communities housing.”

The housing in Hertsmere will be located near to Elstree and Borehamwood station, while the area in Mill Hill East, which is in the course of being purchased, will provide a central location. Ms Wolfe added, “Our founders in 1885 committed to creating excellent buildings, and we are maintaining that”.

IDS recently opened a housing waiting list, with its board having committed to building 500 affordable and shared ownership homes over the next decade, especially in areas where there is evidence of housing and financial need within the Jewish community. Those interested can apply, with offers being made to waiting list applicants by the end of November.
