Jewish students elect Ella Rose as the next UJS President
University of Nottingham student Ella Rose has been elected as the next President of the Union of Jewish Students, succeeding Joe Tarsh in June of next year and becoming the first female president in 7 years.
History and Politics student Ella won the right to leadership of UJS in a closely-run race against the University of Manchester’s Raphi Diamond in which 523 students voted – an increase of over 100 more voters than last year – with the results announced at the UJS National Conference yesterday.
Running on a campaign of inclusivity and transparency with the slogan of ‘Watch UJS bloom’, Ella’s proposals included developing a network of Jewish students studying abroad and opening UJS up to increased feedback from the students it represents.

For forty years UJS has supported, represented and connected Jewish students from across the UK and Ireland. No matter what a person’s beliefs or backgrounds are, they are welcome to become members.
UJS ensures that our needs are met, that our beliefs and cultural requirements are understood by student unions and by universities. Those of us who require kosher food are put in touch with the right people to make sure that we can get it, in some cases we have even managed to get kosher food outlets on our campuses! We come together to learn, to eat, to lobby and to have a lot of fun too. We play football against each other, we do quiz nights, we host Friday Night Dinners and we initiate and facilitate interfaith activity. It is an honour to have been elected by the Jewish students of the UK and Ireland so that I can ensure that UJS continues this necessary work.
I believe that it is vital that UJS’ members stay constantly involved in how their union is run. As President I wish to introduce new mechanisms so that feedback can easily be sent to me throughout the year. I also want to honour the achievements of past UJS members by inviting them to share their experiences and expertise with current students via an Alumni network.
I would like to mention and thank to Raphi Diamond, who ran against me. Raphi’s campaign was incredibly strong and I have taken inspiration from many of his visions.
