Jewish woman gets ‘Greetings from Uncle Adolf’ note in Amazon package

Online retailer Amazon has sacked an employee after they included a handwritten note with a parcel to a Jewish woman, which read: “Greetings from Uncle Adolf.”

The woman, who is in her 30s but who does not wish to be named, received the item and note on 22 December and reported it immediately, with friends saying she was so upset she was shaking.

The Metropolitan Police said officers were called to reports of an offence of malicious communications, and that the incident was being treated as a “hate crime,” but that no arrests had yet been made.

Amazon this week confirmed that the employee in question had been dismissed, and that an apology had been made to the customer, adding: “We take this incident seriously.”

The unidentified former employee is believed to have targeted the woman because of her “Jewish-sounding surname,” and enclosed the note with a toy she had ordered for her niece.

The woman’s Israeli friend, Liran Meydat, praised the police response, after officers arrived within 20 minutes of the complaint, but criticised Amazon, saying: “We contacted them on the same day and didn’t hear anything back. I’ve now given them hell over it.”
