Jewish youth centre volunteer spared jail over child porn crimes

Rafi Caplin, 72, handed suspended eight month jail sentence at Snaresbrook Crown Court after being found to have dozens of pornographic images

A 72-year man from Woodford Green who volunteered at a Jewish youth community centre has been spared jail after he was found to have dozens of pornographic images of children on his phone, laptop and computer.

Rafi Caplin, of Northumberland House, Hampstead Avenue, was given a suspended eight month jail sentence at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Tuesday.

He pleaded guilty to possessing 16 of the most severe Category A images, 65 Category B images and 13 Category C images. Prosecutor Helen McCormack said many included boys being penetrated.

The judge, who told Caplin that a suspended sentence would “both rehabilitate and punish you,” heard how the images had been found by accident, when his equipment was seized in a separate investigation two years ago. Investigators found that he had been making “systematic” searches for imagery since March 2014.

Caplin will now be placed on the Sex Offenders Register for ten years, ordered to pay £750 court costs and placed under a 9pm to 7am curfew.
