The Jewish Lads’ and Girls’ Brigade have been chosen for one of the special Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Volunteering Awards, the government has announced.

The organisation, which helps to develop essential life skills and offers experiences to help young Jewish people reach their potential,  were one of 20 charities given the one-off prize for their work done in the community.

JLGB is the UK’s oldest Jewish youth movement, it was founded in 1895 as the Jewish Lads’ Brigade by Colonel Albert E. W. Goldsmid, a senior army officer, to provide an interest for children of the many poor immigrant families who were coming into England at that time.

Their president is Lord Levy.

A girls section was formed after the Second World War. JLGB  now provide a diverse range of activities within a Jewish environment, including camping, voluntary and community service, citizenship, sports, drama, social events, crafts, music, outdoor pursuits and tours.

Other winners included the British Youth Council, Ethnic Minorities and Youth Support Team, and LGBT Youth Scotland.

Confirmed the awards Culture Secretary Michelle Donelan said: “From Action Tutoring to StreetGames, these 20 charities deliver outstanding work to help give young people the skills they need to grow and succeed.

“I’m delighted that their contribution is being recognised with a Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Volunteering Award.

“Ensuring young people get the best possible start in life is a priority for me and the Government, and there is no more fitting way to celebrate these brilliant charities than a unique edition of the highest award for voluntary service.”

The annual Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS), saw 244 local voluntary organisations given awards for enhancing the lives of others in June.
