JLM hopeful of ‘return to positive relationship’ after meeting general secretary

Labour’s Jewish affiliate has raised hopes of “a return to a positive relationship” with party leadership after meeting general secretary David Evans on Wednesday.

Members of the Jewish Labour Movement’s executive committee met Jennie Formby’s successor to discuss the party’s handling of antisemitism complaints.

Evans was appointed earlier this year by Labour’s ruling body to replace Formby after the close Jeremy Corbyn ally stood down from the post.

A spokesperson for the affiliate said topics raised during the meeting included members’ experiences of antisemitism, “the broken disciplinary procedure and the personal and political impact of the party’s failure to tackle it.”

Also discussed were “ongoing issues” related to the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s investigation into the Labour Party, expected to publish its findings later this year.

“We recognise the steps being made by the new leadership of the party and we’re hopeful that this is a return to a positive relationship between the Jewish Labour Movement and Labour’s HQ,” the spokesperson said.

“We look forward to working constructively together once the EHRC has published its findings.”
