JN Junior: who inspires you?

Enter our amazing writing competition - you could win an iPad!

GENUIS JAKE says: I am so excited about this month’s JN Junior. Not only is it Rosh Hashana (Jewish New Year), but we are also launching our brilliant writing competition and the chance for you to win an iPad for both yourself and your school!

The Jewish News has once again teamed up with WIZO and PJ Library for our third annual Young Writers Competition. And it’s all about being inspired. Rosh Hashanah is the perfect time to reflect on the past 12 months and on those who have inspired us in some way. WIZO have been reflecting on women that have made a real difference with their campaign, Women Leading the Way to a Better Future. This year I have been inspired by the Queen – the second-longest reigning monarch in history – who celebrated her Platinum Jubilee; the ‘Lionesses’ for their historic win over Germany in the Women’s European Football Championship this Summer; and the extraordinarily brave Dame Deborah James, who passed away in June from bowel cancer, aged 40. She worked incredibly hard to raise awareness of bowel cancer since she found out she had the disease in 2016. Other inspiring people this year include the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, who has shown great resilience as he leads his country through the devastating war with Russia. I have also been inspired by Terry Deary because I love his Horrible History books, and my twin sister Jenna because she always sees the bright side of things. People can be inspiring for all sorts of reasons – they don’t need to be famous or well-known. So, as we get ready to bring in the Jewish New Year, reflecting on the past and hopeful for the future, we want to know who inspires you and how?

Eli Bibring, age 8, from Mill Hill, north London, says: Every time I watch my football team, Tottenham Hotspur, I feel inspired by Son Heung Min. I love to see him work together with his teammates to score brilliant goals. He is so skilful. Son scored 23 goals this season and was jointly awarded the Premier League’s iconic Golden Boot Award. My favourite part of the week is when I get to go with my family to watch Son play at White Hart Lane – he is a true inspiration.

GOOD NEWS FOR… Tigers!

Nepal has now doubled its wild tiger population! A 2022 survey revealed there are now 355 individuals in the country, a nearly 200 per cent increase since 2009. The World Wildlife Federation (WWF) reports that it is an incredible achievement and testament to the conservation efforts of the government, partners, and local communities over the last 12 years.
