Judge to review Janner case: ‘Depth of concern warrants exhaustive investigation’

The New Zealand judge charged with unearthing the truth behind historical child sex abuse in England and Wales is to “fully investigate” the claims relating to Lord (Greville) Janner.

With new alleged victims coming forward, and an application to review the decision not to charge Janner, despite reason to do so, Judge Lowell Goddard acknowledged the “depth of public concern” about the case, it warranted an “exhaustive” investigation. 

Goddard will also probe whether the Labour peer avoided trial thanks to an establishment cover-up.

Since 1991, he was the subject of four separate investigations into child sex abuse, but never charged.

Meanwhile, it emerged this week that Janner sent a ‘thank you’ Christmas card to his investigating detective and offered to host him and his wife at Parliament, after the Labour peer learned he would not be charged.

Retired Det. Insp. Kelvyn Ashby of Leicestershire Police said he was appalled by the handwritten note on official House of Lords paper. “I was extremely frustrated,” said Ashby in an interview this week. “Janner should have been arrested. He was treated differently because he was an MP.”
