Julia Glushko knocked out of US Open

Israeli beaten in straight sets by world number 20 at Flushing Meadows

Julia Glushko

Julia Glushko’s US Open came to a comprehensive end on Thursday afternoon after she was beaten by Japan’s Naomi Osaka in straight sets.

Having battled past three qualifiers to reach the main round of the draw, and then beating Monica Niculescu in the first round of Monday, Osaka, ranked at number 20 in the world proved to be a step too far for the Israeli.

With her left leg heavily bandaged, the first set was level after four games, before Osaka took over, breaking Glushko, to win the next four games, and taking the set 6-2.

The second set was a much more comprehensive affair, Glusko broken three times as Osaka won it 6-0, with little less than an hour played on court.

Later on Thursday Argentine Diego Schwartzman faces Spain’s Jaume Munar, for a place in round three.
