Jewish comedian David Baddiel has criticised Kanye West’s suggestion that slavery in America was a choice, saying the Holocaust “wasn’t a choice either”.

The superstar wrapper sparked controversy when he said during an interview with TMZ Live: “When you hear about slavery for 400 years … for 400 years? That sounds like a choice.

“Like, you was there for 400 years and it’s all of y’all? It’s like we’re mentally in prison. I like the word prison because slavery goes too direct to the idea of blacks.

“It’s like slavery, Holocaust. Holocaust, Jews. Slavery is blacks.

David Baddiel took to Twitter to criticise West, sending a picture with the text: “Slavery is to blacks as the Holocaust is to Jews”, before writing: “Just a heads up, Kanye: that wasn’t a choice, either”, in reference to the Shoah.

Meanwhile Suits actor Wendell Pierce hit out at West for using “the murder and Holocaust of slavery for your own self aggrandisement

West attracted criticism from other public figures including Rapper Will.i.am, Piers Morgan and fellow musician John Legend.
