Kashket helps Wycombe into cup semi-final

Wycombe Wanderers midfielder Scott Kashket came off the bench to help the League Two side beat Mansfield 2-1 on Tuesday, and book their place in the semi-finals of the Checkatrade Trophy.

The Chairboys were trailing at half-time to a Matt Green penalty – conceded after Joe Jacobson was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box. But within minutes of coming on as a 66th minute substitute, Kashket pounced after Jake Green spilled a shot in the home goal to turn the ball home. The win was sealed minutes later when Adebayo Akinfenwa controlled in the box, before firing home.

Delighted with the club’s extended run in the competition – and now being one game away from Wembley – Kashket told Jewish News: “It’s brilliant. It’s also a bit weird because when you think about it last month, everyone thinks the competition has just started, but before you know it, you’re one game away from the final – but we’re taking it one game at a time.”

Jacobson told Jewish News: “The gaffer said the match was the biggest we’ve had for a while, for the club it’s huge to get that far in the competition, with the prize money and so on.

“One game away from Wembley, it’s a great achievement to reach the semi-final in any competition and as players, unless you’re in the top four or six clubs in the Premier League, getting to Wembley doesn’t happen very often at all.

“Fans and players want to see their clubs get to Wembley so to be one game away from there is a massive achievement for us. The game was our sixth in the competition, we’re all really happy this morning and can now concentrate on the Spurs game.”
