Labour councillor suspended for anti-Semitic post

Calls have been made for Labour to expel Cllr Andy Slack for sharing an image that said Israel was created by the Rothschilds

The Labour Party has been asked to expel a councillor from Chesterfield who has been suspended after posting an anti-Semitic meme on Facebook.

On 30 September Cllr Andy Slack shared an image of a hook-nosed Israeli soldier whose mouth and hands are covered in blood, under the caption: “Israel was created by the Rothschilds, not God… And what they are doing to the Palestinian people now is EXACTLY what they intend for the whole world.”

Slack has apologised, in a statement to political website Guido Fawkes, saying: “I wish to apologise for an offensive post which I shared for a short time without properly reading one content, especially anyone of the Jewish faith.”

He added: “I also apologise to my Labour Party colleagues and point out that it had no connection with any organisation which I am a member. I support Palestinians in occupied Gaza but am in no way opposed to Jewish people”

Board of Deputies’ vice-president Marie van der Zyl said: “This is the kind of vile anti-Semitic slur we would normally associate with the extreme right. We call on Labour to confirm that he will be expelled from the party immediately if this verified.”
