L’chaim to 50 years of Fiddler! Get your free ticket to tonight’s celebration

A unique chance to celebrate the golden anniversary of Fiddler On The Roof takes place this Sunday. 

Jewish News is reuniting the actors who played the leading roles in the 1971 movie on a virtual platform hosted by JW3. For many of them, it will be the first time they have seen each other for 50 years.

The film, adapted from the stage musical by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick and based on Sholem Aleichem’s Tevye the Milkman, won three Academy Awards, including best music, scoring adaptation and original song score for arranger-conductor John Williams. Directed by the non-Jewish Norman Jewison, who is now 94, the film introduced Chaim Topol, who played Tevye, a role for which he received a nomination as best actor.

Topol’s youngest daughter, Adit, who played Chava when her father was in the musical at the London Palladium, will also join the platform on Sunday alongside Rosalind Harris (Tzeitel) Michele Marsh (Hodel), Neva Small (Chava) and Candy Bonstein (Bielke).

Celebrities and politicians join Tevyes in singing ‘To Life’:

Paul Michael Glaser, who made his screen debut as the student Perchik in Jewison’s film, has also agreed to appear and share memories of the production, which was filmed in Yugoslavia.

Interior shots were filmed at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire as well as the iconic graveyard scene in which Fruma Sarah appears in Tevye’s dream.

The casting of Ruth Madoc – who became a Hi Dee Hi star – as Lazar Wolf’s dead wife still surprises audiences, and the actress will make a guest appearance on Sunday where she will meet the cast for the first time at an event hosted by Jewish News’ Life magazine editor, Brigit Grant.

More than 1,400 tickets for the event have already been reserved.
