Lions roar past Boca boys

London Lions Green claimed the first win in the Barry Goldstein Trophy as they eased past Boca Jewniors at Rowley Lane.

On a typically first class pitch, Lions took the lead halfway through the first half when a Josh Platt cross managed to evade everyone, including the goalkeeper and sailed into the net, despite a valiant effort from the Boca defender to clear the ball off the line.

Lions doubled their lead shortly afterwards through Dan Reuben, from a short corner. Asher Goldberg fizzed the ball into the area and a combination of the Boca goalkeeper and defender kept the ball out, but Reuben was on hand to steer the rebound in through the defenders’ legs.

At 2-0 Boca could easily have given up but credit must go to the away side who continued to create chances and ensured that the Lions defence had to stay on their toes throughout.

The score stayed the same until midway into the second half, that was until Lions added a third. A Goldberg ball over the top caught  out the Boca defence, who were holding a high line, Sam Collins, running onto the ball, unselfishly squared it to David Pollock who finished it into the bottom corner to make it 3-0.

The fourth goal came a quarter of an hour later when a great Sam Collins corner from the left was met by Grant Bates who rose above his marker and headed the ball into the net.

Lions saw out the game despite a small late flurry from Boca and ultimately it was too little, too late as Lions ran out deserved winners in a game which they never looked like losing.
