Israel’s foreign affairs minister Yair Lapid has hailed what he said was a “warm and friendly conversation” with Liz Truss, the UK’s foreign secretary.

In a tweet confirmed the two had spoken, Lapid said he had congratulated Truss on her new role and offered my deepest condolences on the death of Sir David Amess.

Lapid then added:”We discussed how we can continue to strengthen our bilateral ties, especially in science, technology, and commerce.

“We also agreed to explore opportunities for expanding regional cooperation.”

In a speech at the Conservative Friends of Israel reception earlier this month, Truss has spoken of her desire to build “deeper relations” with the Jewish state, particularly around trade, technology and security.

She also named Israel as being amongst the UK’s most trusted allies as she spoke of a new “network of liberty” to counter authoritarian states and “malign actors.”
