Lord Robert Winston receives prestigious award at Technion UK gala

Labour peer and leading fertility expert Lord Robert Winston received a prestigious accolade at a gala hosted by the British fundraising arm of The Technion.

The surgeon and scientist, 79, who grew up in North London, pioneered techniques that improved in vitro fertilisation, presented several BBC series over the years and is an emeritus professor at Imperial College London.

Lord Winston accepted the Churchill Award on Monday for his achievements in the fields of fertility and genetics and his “strong commitment to Technion and the State of Israel” at an event hosted by Technion UK in Mayfair, attended by 300 people.

The award was named after former Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who famously praised the “great” contributions made by Israel’s oldest university.

The ceremony’s main speaker was brigadier general Professor Jacob Nagel, who hailed the successes seen by The Technion in national security and discussed Israel’s aerial defence technology. “We, Israelis live in a jungle. The weak can’t survive in the Middle East,” he told the audience.
