Luciana Berger storms to victory in Liverpool with nearly 70% of the vote

Liverpool’s Jewish Labour MPs have been returned to Parliament with increased five-figure majorities – on a night of heavy losses for their party.

Luciana Berger retained Liverpool Wavertree with a 69.3% of the vote – an increase of 16.2% on her 2010 total.

The Shadow Public Health Minister, who romped home with over 24,000 more votes than her nearest rival, vowed to “fight every day” for her constituents.

In the adjacent Liverpool Riverside constituency, Louise Ellman saw off a challenge from the Greens and gained over 10,000 votes to increase her majority to an emphatic 24,463 or 55.3%.

Despite high hopes for the Greens in one of their national target seats, the vice-president of the All Party Parliamentary Group against Antisemitism faced little trouble in securing a resounding 67.4% of the vote.

On a bad night for Labour nationally, Ellman called on the Labour faithful to “pull together” to fight austerity and the bedroom tax.
