Lucy Frazer promoted in reshuffle as Mike Freer gets new government role

Jewish MP becomes Financial Secretary to the Treasury while MP for Finchley and Golders Green made Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the International Trade Department

Lucy Frazer – one of the few Jewish women in government – has become Financial Secretary to the Treasury responsible for tax policy and customers including border readiness, in Boris Johnson’s latest reshuffle.

The MP for South East Cambridgeshire has been moved to the treasury post having previously been at the Minister of Justice, and had until last week stood in for Solicitor-General Suella Braverman, who has now returned from maternity leave.

Frazer, a QC, grew up in Leeds where she was a member of BBYO in her youth.

She replaces Jesse Norman as a Treasury Minister. Norman said he had agreed to resign after the Prime Minister told him he wanted to “improve the diversity and representation” in government.

Frazer was first elected to Parliament in 2015 and her role up until last week  had been as prisons and probation minister.

In a further change, the PM has given the Finchley and Golders Green MP Mike Freer a departmental job as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the International Trade Department.

The move means Freer is no longer a government whip.
