Jewish school pupil found hanged in suspected suicide

The body of a teenage girl, reportedly a member of the Charedi community, was discovered hanged in a derelict building in Manchester.

The 16-year-old victim was a pupil at Yavneh Girls in King David High School in Crumpsall, according to a report in the Manchester Evening News.

Police said the teenager was reported missing from her home in Prestwich at around 9.30am yesterday and discovered 20 minutes later in an empty building in Salford by a family member.

The cause of death is still yet to be established but detectives are working to confirm how she died, Greater Manchester Police said in a statement, with local reports saying it was a suicide. 

King David High School confirmed the identity of the pupil as Sarah Goldman.

The school said in a statement: “Sarah was a lovely, bright, intelligent and well-mannered pupil and she will be hugely missed by everyone at school.”

Superintendent Caroline Hemmingway said on Tuesday, that Greater Manchester Police was “keeping an open mind and will be exploring all avenues”. 

She added they were “investigating the tragic death of a 16-year-old girl in Kersal, and it is our top priority to find out exactly how she died.

“The investigation is still in its early stages and a scene remains in place in the building near to Brookside Drive.

“We are trying to piece together this puzzle and help give the girl’s family the answers they deserve.”
