Masters football review – week one
Sunday morning saw the new Maccabi Masters League season get underway, writes Jeremy Silverstone.
The Maccabi Masters League re-opened for business this week with a new sponsor, in the form of Bond Management (Int) Ltd, and a new Division 1 team for Maccabi London Lions.
DIVISION ONE:
TABLE
New boys Lions almost had the perfect start, with Paul Lenchner, Gideon Barnett and a penalty from Hadley Silver putting them 3-1 up at the interval, although Scrabble replied through Lloyd Becker’s spot-kick.
However, with just ten minutes remaining, Lions were reduced to ten men, and Scrabble took advantage of their numerical superiority with Andy Miller scoring a superb solo goal with just three minutes remaining, and then smashing in a last-minute equaliser after a goalmouth scramble, the game finishing 3-3.
Meanwhile, debutant Graeme Grossman and Scott Ansher scored the goals that helped Brady A to a 2-1 victory, with James Pinkus scoring for HMH.
DIVISION TWO:
TABLE
A hat-trick from Lloyd Nygate and a strike from Adam Lennard gave Glenthorne a 4-2 win over EDRS, for whom Jon Kaye and Tony Platman netted.
Goals from Jonny Feinmesser, Paul Herszaft, Mark Nathan, Grant Morgan and Johnny Mansoor gave St John’s Wood Tigers a 5-0 win over Marshside.
