Minim: the new young choir giving life to the Jewish choral tradition

As a new collective, Minim are nothing if not dynamic.

In less than a week since forming, the 25-strong choral collective are already attracting attention with a series of recordings and an ambitious aim to bring young Jewish singers from mixed religious backgrounds together to perform Jewish sacred choral music.

“Just a few decades ago, many synagogues in the UK had mixed choirs performing liturgical Jewish music in services and in concert,” states co-founder Sophie Ross, “Today, these have all but disappeared.”

Describing the choir as a “truly pluralist group of different ‘kinds’ of people, not just due to our widely diverse musical experience but also our varied religious backgrounds”, Sophie thinks Minim can fill a niche as a mixed choir with no strict synagogal affiliation.

“We want to do this music justice, bringing it to the national and international stage [to] Jewish and non-Jewish audiences.”
